Bad Day? Take a Walk!

Estimated read time... 2 minutes

Let’s face it, we all experience “bad days” where nothing seems to go right.  Days like that can be hard to turn around.  You can turn a bad day around!

My most recent bad day was one of those days when you wake up and your bread for toast is moldy, your water bottle makes your water taste soapy, your memory stick goes MIA and your wi-fi connection at work gets all messed up and you can’t remember the password because the file that you had it written on in the computer is lost (not because of the memory stick but because the email program you saved the file in hemorrhaged.)  It was one of those “everything that can go wrong is going wrong” days…

What I find most interesting about days like this is that they seem to build on each other – all of the inconvenient things, things that are not right, compound to create a seemingly insurmountably bad day.

Because nothing seems to be going your way, give yourself a break by getting a good, healthy lunch,  drink mineral water, take your vitamins and herbs, and go outside for a walk.

Sometimes I think there is nothing that can’t be cured by a walk outside.  While I know this is oversimplifying the complicated lives that we lead, a 20 minute walk can do wonders for the body and soul.

By taking a walk, you give yourself permission to enjoy the sunshine, and if it is raining – enjoy the smell of the rain, the fact that water brings new life and cleanses the earth.  If you have rain boots on – jump in a puddle like a kid – why not?!  Observe the way the light hits the trees, grass, flowers, buildings.  What does the sky look like?  What color is it, what about the clouds’ shapes, colors, movement?  Are there birds singing?  How many different birdsongs do you hear?  What animals and insects do you encounter?

Marvel at the wonder of your perfectly imperfect body, the weight of your body hitting the earth (or concrete, blacktop, gravel, grass.)  Observe how your body carries you places, how your legs and feet work to bring you places.  If you can, spend some time under a tree.  Trees and plants are wonders  of our world – converting carbon dioxide and sunshine into oxygen – it is an amazing fete and one that we take for granted all too often.

Allow your walk to cleanse your mind for a fresh start – mid-day, mid-morning, or in the evening.

When things don’t seem to be going your way, take a walk!
